A Monday morning conversation
Last Monday, a classmate of mine told me that there was little point in working so hard in the hope of getting As & Bs and that the payoff wasn't that great for her.
She further explained that after so many years of tests & exams, we are all now at the final stage of our education. She alluded that no matter what our grades are, we'll still be practising Law. And one's honours class isn't really that important once we move on to practice.
My initial reaction was to disagree. My reply was that perhaps we should just give our best in whatever we do. I however left unsaid the analogy that runners typically throw in every remaining ounce of energy at the final stretch and the same is probably applicable to our context.
Over the weekend though, I thought I finally understood what she was trying to convey. We are at the final stretch of our education yes, but the race will still continue ad infinitum even as we graduate. There will never be any real final stretch.
It's a never ending race for material wealth and recognition, but everyone has the choice to opt out. For most (including myself) at my level however, it would no doubt be an exceedingly difficult decision to do so. The stakes are just too high...
